While the FBI director did not point fingers or offer any new evidence, his remarks on Fox News give legitimacy to the theory that the virus was not naturally occurring, and not transferred from an infected animal to humans – something Beijing has pushed hard.
This theory has already gained traction in the US, backed by some prominent Republican members of congress and President Donald Trump.
Since the start of the pandemic, China has been the target of criticism, especially over its initial handling of the outbreak in its Hubei province. It is not yet clear whether a leak from a lab had anything at all to do with the outbreak.
The investigation into the virus’s origins has been further complicated by the lack of full diplomatic access to China. An international team of researchers from the World Health Organization failed to gain access to interview key people and investigate records.
It is no surprise that Fox News, a longtime backer of President Trump, decided to broadcast Wray’s remarks. The president has long claimed the COVID-19 pandemic began in a lab.
